Twice the power to fight ageing
by Corinne Kerk

Twenty-seven years since its birth, Clarins's anti-ageing Double Serum has undergone yet another makeover to appear in a totally different formula from the Double Serum Generation 6 that was launched in 2007.

As its name suggests, there are actually two anti-ageing serums in one bottle - one is a water-based (hydric) serum while the other is oil-based (lipidic). The two serums replicate the skin's natural protective layer made of an emulsion of water (hydro) and fat (lipos) - and the nature of skin cells to produce a formula which mimics the skin for maximum effectiveness.

The two serums are kept separate till they are used so that powerful ingredients can be incorporated without limiting their number or risk incompatibility. A new precision pump is able to dispense the correct proportion of both serums every time, and without the user having to tilt the bottle in a certain angle to do so.

This new double formula, claims the French brand, is the only age-control treatment that stimulates the five vital functions responsible for youthful skin - hydration, nutrition, oxygenation, protection and regeneration.

Being a brand rooted in plant-based technology, Clarins's Double Serum ($118 for 30ml) is packed with 20 plant extracts so different skin types can benefit from different ingredients depending on their individual states.

One key ingredient is a Chinese herb, cang zhu, which boosts the efficacy of the other plant extracts in the formula by stimulating a protein in the cell membranes, which in turn amplifies the messages sent to the cells by the formula's active ingredients.

In tests involving over 400 women, of whom 50 were Asian, Clarins says the Double Serum was effective on all signs of ageing, leading to firmer, more elastic skin, a reduction in wrinkles, a more even complexion and less visible pores.

The Double Serum brings together a light gel and a soft cream in a fresh scent developed by a Japanese master perfumer. Meant to address the signs of ageing in women aged 25 onwards, it can be applied morning and/or night with other Clarins products.

Available at all Clarins counters from Sept 15.
