JOHOR BARU - A 26-year-old foreign worker claimed that she was raped and abused by her employer for more than a year.

The woman, identified as "S" from Hyderabad in India, said she came to Malaysia in 2010 on the invitation of a friend to work as a cashier at a sundry store in Ulu Tiram before she was employed at a pub in Permas Jaya.

She said her ordeal began last year when her employer started making advances towards her.

She claimed that the man had raped her almost daily and would beat her up if she refused to comply.

The woman added that she had to undergo two abortions which he paid for.

Unable to stand her employer's abuse, she escaped last month and sought the assistance of a church group and Tenaganita.

The woman, who lodged complaints with the Indian High Commission and Labour Department, also claimed that she had lodged several police reports, but said her employer only received warnings.

She also alleged that her employer, who she said is a gang member, also refused to pay her wages for several months.

Tenaganita programme officer Liva Sree Dharan said the organisation had spoken to the employer, asking him to pay the wages he owed the woman.

"She has lodged four police reports. We hope the police will help her and investigate the alleged abuses she had gone through," she added.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaacob said the matter was being investigated.

An Indian High Commission official confirmed receiving a complaint from the victim.
