Goods of Desire to open flagship store in S'pore

Hong Kong lifestyle label Goods of Desire will be heading to the shores of Singapore at the end of June this year.

Their flagship store, set to open in Central at Clarke Quay, is the first overseas store from the retail brand which is known for its quaint knick-knacks, furniture, homeware and fashion items.

Occupying more than 6,000-square feet of retail space at Central, the Singapore store will effectively be its fourth-largest. Goods of Desire currently has eight stores in Hong Kong.

Most of their signature goods feature tongue-in-cheek designs that are quintessentially Hong Kong, demonstrating the city's vibrant heritage through controversial humour and creativity.

The brand's Chinese name, originally derived from the Cantonese phrase "to live better", will be represented in Singapore as Goods of Desire, or simply known as G.O.D. to the locals in Hong Kong.

Goods of Desire was co-founded by architects Douglas Young and Benjamin Lau in 1996 as a retail space in Ap Lei Chau.

Deep similarities between Hong Kong and Singapore are what led the them to select the island-state as the location for Goods of Desire's first overseas store.

"Evolving from a colonial past to its present cosmopolitan climate, modern and undeniably Asian all at once, Singapore is truly an ethnic melting pot steeped in both tradition and innovation," said Mr Young.

He added: "It is a shame that we took so long to do this, given how many fans we know we have here.

Nevertheless, it has always been my dream to show the rest of the world the Hong Kong I know, and I cannot think of a more perfect place to start with than Singapore."

Far East Organisation's fashion and lifestyle arm, LifeStyle Scene, is responsible for bringing the brand here and also holds the exclusive license for Goods of Desire in Singapore.
