Why more married women are not having kids

SINGAPORE - A small-scale study has shed some light on why fewer women in Singapore are procreating - and it is not because they do not want children.

An in-depth study into 16 Singaporean Chinese women revealed that factors like financial constraints and careers are major considerations when women think about having children.

The Straits Times (ST) reported that eight of those women surveyed - who are not degree holders and earn an average monthly pay of $2,350 - cited the lack of money as a key reason for not wanting to start a family.

Most of them said they desire children but feel that they cannot afford to raise a child in costly and highly competitive place like Singapore.

For university graduates who earn an average monthly pay of $6,250, most feel they may not be able to juggle motherhood and their jobs well, therefore are unwilling to sacrifice their career prospects, said ST.

The qualitative study, conducted by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), examines why Chinese Singaporean women consciously choose not to have children.

While the NTU findings are not representative of the entire population, it supports latest Census figures which shows that more married Singaporeans are not having babies.

In 2010, 20.5 per cent of ever-married female citizens in the 30 to 39 age group were childless. A decade ago in 2000, the figure was 13.2 per cent.

According to the same report, the proportion of women in the later part of their child-bearing years who are childless also increased, but less sharply.

8.6 per cent of ever-married female citizens in the 40 to 49 age group were childless - up from 6 per cent in 2000.

Ever-married refers to those currently married, divorced or widowed.

Having a kid is equivalent to a sign of High Income and Upper Class Social Status or Suicidal and Irresponsible Status in Singapore .... take a simple close-up look at couples with kid and see their dressing and spending, and its not difficult to determine with category they belongs ... :p

Raising kids is no different to raising pets for the high income and high class people ... infact, it have been magnifested in plenty of school incidents whereby their kids are raised into animals walking on 2 legs .... :D

As for those raising kids with low family income... many of they help to supply new blood to local workforce for secret societies, ah long runners, pimps, prostitution .... :p :D

Another side of the story - Married women who say they dont want kids are just plain selfish, they dont want to be seen as such, so they conveniently push all the blame to the husbands and government, saying husbands are unlikely to help with childcare, government pushes up cost of child rearing blah blah blah....cut the crap

The truth is they want to maintain their careers, lifestyle, freedom and body figures.....I wonder if their mothers had thought the same way as them, would these self-centered women be here today sprouting all this crap??

There are many stages in raising a kid. From baby, kids, teenagers, etc...couples must be mentally and financially prepared for it.
But couple will get joys and accompany. That one no money can buy.

It is not very costly to raise children. It's what one want to make it to be.

Kids are so innocent and angelic when young. Who can resist them ?

In some cases, the reasons why married women decide not to have kids may run deeper than personal choice. I know of some cases where both partners just can't have children because of biological reasons and they do not wish to adopt.

I'm quite sure somewhere along this thread., ppl will start talking abt exPM/MM LEE's 2-child policy. B4 that I wish to reiterarate that his policy actually worked well - as ppl were struggling even with 1 child!!

Singapore is the 10 most expensive cities in the world. There are no job security, expensive education (help is given to foreigners instead), expensive hdb flats (cheap for the minister - detact from reality of life due to high pay), being a 2nd class citizen in their own country, reduce living space in hdb (at higher cost) policy that drive against married people from having more kids. The govt now thinks they are pro-family but most of their policies only drive people from having more kids.

Need to wake up.
