Cultural medallion winner gets to the bottom of art
by Sara Ann K

Amanda Heng turns heads every time she puts on the iconic batik sarong kebaya worn by Singapore Airlines hostesses. But it's not on account of her shapely figure.

Far from it, the 61-year-old with the head full of silver hair is turning heads for another reason.

One of Singapore's most renowned contemporary female artists, the cultural medallion winner is well known for using her art to make a statement. Her most famous and ongoing series is the 2-year-old Singirl in which she donned the famous SQ girl uniform in a veiled critique on identity and gender politics.

Her first solo exhibition, "Speak to me, Walk with me" was staged at the 8Q @ SAM and ran from October 6th, 2011 to January 1st, 2012.

A retrospective exhibition that spanned her 25 year career as a full-time arts practitioner, the exhibition also had a small private room where female volunteers were invited to take snapshots of their bare bottoms for an art project called singirl.net

"People came to me and said this experience was very liberating because it was the first time for them to feel that they are thinking about the issues and the first time for them to look at their bottoms. They've never paid attention to it even though it's such an important part of their body," said Amanda.

An online gallery, singirl.net started with a photo of Amanda's own bare bottom taken in 2006 during a collaborative stint with the Singapore Tyler Print Institute.

The project currently features 58 volunteers, and has more than 30 participants photos queued to be uploaded.
