Too much in love to let the day go by
by Ivan Loh, Hong Siew Lee

IPOH: While most people her age are partying and having fun, kindergarten teacher Katherine Lai Weng Yee has decided to settle down.

The 18-year-old said she found her one true love in Chan Chee Heng, 20, and felt it was the right time to settle down."I don't think we're too young to get married," said Lai, when met during a mass wedding ceremony at the Ipoh Chinese Chin Woo Athletic Association hall on Valentine's Day yesterday.

Lai said both Chan's and her parents had no objection to their marriage.

She said they knew each other during their school days at SMK Pinji here but only started dating three years ago.

Lai said that Chan was a hopeless romantic and proposed to her in a karaoke room on Christmas Eve last year.

"I was surprised when the television screen started showing pictures of us," said Lai.

"He got down on one knee and popped the question," she said, adding that she shed tears of happiness before saying yes.

"For this Valentine's Day, getting married is probably the best gift I could ever wish for," she said.

Chan, who works at his father's architecture firm, said Lai was a kind-hearted, caring and generous person.

They were the youngest among 17 couples who had their marriages solemnised by assistant registrar Datuk Ooi Foh Sing.
