Like the sky and the earth
by Nazreen Tajul Arif

THEY met by the swimming pool at the young, naive age of 11. One was a great swimmer, and the other wanted to lose weight through swimming.

One's a tiny, fragile thing, while the other is big, broad and strong. Though nobody would think they'd make each other's perfect Valentines, it was love at first splash for them.

Eiza might be small in stature but her motor-mouth and stern glare can send shivers down your spine if you're on the receiving end.

Gdin, on the other hand, is the silent type with a penchant for fast cars.

She is usually calm and collected, but tends to "explode" when things don't go according to plan while he is vice-versa.

They are as different as the sky and earth and yet they bonded in an unusual off and on, off and on (again) relationship full of drama that spanned 18 years and the distance between Malaysia and Scotland, no less, when we were all still studying.

This confirmed love-cynic melted when Gdin asked me to help him plan a surprise visit to Edinburgh just to apologise to Eiza over a misunderstanding; I have to admit it was fun playing along with the noble project.

They took me along to Rome afterwards when they went on holiday, as a "thank you" for my role in keeping them together. And being the nice people that they are, they never made me feel like a third wheel, even asking me to tag along on their movie night outings.

They make such a wonderful couple that they have, over the years, become the first people I introduce prospective boyfriends to for "screening" purposes.

And after all the heartaches, happy times, ups and downs, tears and laughter, they finally got married, just two years short of the 10-year anniversary of when they met.

I think I was joined by both their families and by other friends in letting out a huge sigh of relief when that finally happened.

Gdin and Eiza, to me, are the couple, one that could rival Brangelina and the Beckhams. Even though they might not trust me to baby-sit their two little children because I love to spoil and pamper them. Oh, and because when they are older, I intend to tell them all the juicy gossip about how their father met their mother and how they finally came to be married.
