Gender-bending model turns heads, raises eyebrows

This could be the future face of fashion.

With a slender figure, flowing blonde hair, and a face that boasts full, pillow lips and high cheekbones, Australian model with Eastern European roots, Andrej Pejic, is exciting the fashion's designers and editors since first appearing on the runways of London, Paris and Tokyo.

Andrej is a male model, but he has been termed 'beautiful', with looks that are reminiscent of a cross between Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford.

The 19-year-old teen fled war-torn Serbia to settle in Australia, was discovered last year.

He is Marc Jacob's latest face and has already walked for big names from walked in shows for Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano to Raf Simmon. Numerous fashion websites gush about this new find, with not less than three editions of Vogue featuring him on their mastheads.

Pejic says his classmates were curious about him while growing up, but he was never bullied. However, because of his androgynous looks, he got 'a lot of free drinks', he said in an interview with Daily Beast.

Part of a rising trend in gender-neutral 'femiman' models, he models both male and female clothes, and even chooses heels and makeup when he dresses himself.

It is also obvious that Pejic is comfortable with his androgyny.

"I may as well push it to the limits," he told WWD back in June 2010. "I wouldn't dress this way if I didn't have fun with it."

But Pejic won't discuss his sexuality, declining to answer what sexual orientation he identified with. When asked if he has a boyfriend or a girlfriend, he responded: 'I have Paris and I have dessert wine.'

His new-found fame is a sign that 'the line between the sexes is becoming more and more blurred,' says Turkish Vogue's editor Seda Dominic. 'Fashion is all about providing people with choices. It doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman.'
