Underneath the sheer dress
by Hong Xinyi

Q: I want to wear sheer dresses but I don't know what to wear underneath. Where can I get affordable slips and chemises - preferably under $150 - that give me more coverage?

Any time you need frills-free foundation pieces - think underwear, tights and slips - I strongly recommend you visit Marks & Spencer.

Yes, the wares from this long-standing British retail chain are not usually deemed trendy or cute but they are always well-made and relatively affordable - the epitome of sensible chic.

Just take your pick from their assortment of slips and petticoats, priced from $79 to $120. I would suggest something like the Multiway Bra Slip ($89), which is a knee-length slip attached to a padded bra.

Equally great would be the Cool Comfort Full Slip ($79, right). This ends above the knee, which makes it great for both short and longer dresses. The polyester material doesn't cling or wrinkle and keeps you cool - very important when you have many layers on.

It also has a round neckline on one side and a V-neck on the other side, which makes it compatible with dresses with either necklines. Both slips come in black and nude colours and give great coverage.
