Is your lifestyle poisoning you?
by Cynthia Loh

It's been a long week at work. You notice that your skin is looking dull from too many late nights, your eyes are blurring over from working at close range on the computer, and there's also that niggling migraine too.

While our bodies are able to naturally remove toxins from the food we eat and the chemicals in the products that we use, sometimes, all that stress and over-indulgence can get a little too much. Here are five easy DIY detox tips provided with help from Ms Terri Tay, trainer at Dermalogica, that you can easily prepare at home.

1) Load up on fruits and veggies

Make detox a part of your diet with plenty of fruits. If you aren't too fond of your fibre, try fruit juices. A popular combination is the A-B-C - apple, beetroot and carrot. Don't have a juicer at home? It's available from most fruit stalls at your nearby food  Alternatively, squeeze some lemon juice into your first glass of water in the morning daily.

2) Brush away

Dry brushing is a gentle form of internal massage that stimulates your skin and bodily organs to detox. Some benefits include removing cellulite, stimulating the lymphatic system which in turns drains toxins away, and also exfoliates skin. Dry brush your body, especially your lower body. Start from the soles of your feet and gently work your way up with a brush that has natural fibre bristles. Be sure to dry brush before you shower or head for your bath.

3) Have detox days
Identify least one day in the week when you ensure that you drink at least three litres of water. On other days, your minimum water intake should be two litres.
At the same time, cut down on caffeinated drinks such as soda and coffee. If you drink these regularly, don't eliminate them completely, but slowly reduce the number of times you consume them to avoid shock to your body.

4) Drink alkaline water
A body's acidity reflects the amount of waste in the body, which can make one feel sick.  Alkaline water helps to neutralize the body's acidity levels.
Researchers in Japan have found that alkaline water is beneficial to health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, liver disorders, allergies and even cancer. Other benefits include maintaining an ideal body weight by emulsifying fatty acids in the body and slowing down the aging process by neutralizing free radicals.

You can turn normal drinking water into alkaline water by ionising it. A simple device, such as the MedKlinn iOsis, can do the job.

5) Breathe deeply
Take a time-out and breathe deeply to get more oxygen into your bloodstream. Deep breathing not only relaxes you, infusing your blood with oxygen also aids your body to digest foods better. Oxygen-rich blood is also more effective in carrying away any toxins out of our bodily systems.
